SILK   DYING   FOR   NEWBIES

Saturday, October 6, 2007
9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
Bishop, CA (exact location will be sent to you upon receipt of your registration)
3-5 participants
$90.00 tuition

Workshop consists of an introduction beginning with discussion of “Creativity vs. Talent” which is followed by an introduction to silk dying, a brief history of dying, silk dyes vs. paints, methods of stretching, water technique, alcohol technique, salt technique, drawing vs. free form, “real” vs. abstract, water-soluble gutta vs. the real thing, and exploration and discovery using all of the above.

Please bring the following supplies:

  1. Jacquard Silk Color Starter Set apx. $19.95   (can be obtained from Dharma Trading at www.dharmatrading.com      #JACSS.   If you order from Dharma, ask to include a catalog in your shipment.  The option is available on one of the payment pages.)

  2. Four Habotai Silk Scarves 21.5” x 21.5” apx. $1.55 each (can be obtained from Dharma Trading at www.dharmatrading.com  #H822)

  3. Drawing Paper or Newsprint large enough to fit inside of stretcher bar frame, from inside edge to inside edge.  You will need more than one piece of paper…and yes, they can be taped together.  You could even use printer paper, but bring about 20 sheets. (can be obtained from local arts and crafts stores, Dharma  Trading at www.dharmatrading.com or Dick Blick Art Materials at www.dickblick.com)

  4. Four – 24” stretcher bars (most often used to stretch canvas) (can be obtained from local arts and crafts stores or Dick Blick Art Materials at www.dickblick.com)

  5. Masking Tape – 1”  or  2” is fine

  6. Small Tupperware Bucket (no lid needed)

  7. Sponge (any kind)

  8. Rags - a couple of old dish towels would be fine

  9. Your journal – if you don’t have one, you should start keeping one now.  It generates inspiration, helps you remember ideas, holds favorite magazine photos you steal from the doctor’s office, etc.

  10. Bring a snack if you like.  Iced tea will be provided.
